WELCOME TO PRAGUE

It is our great pleasure to host the 33rd meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology in Prague in September 2-5, 1999.
    The scientific programme will include 5 State of the Art Lectures, 10 Symposia, 6 invited lectures, some 50 oral free communications and about 300 poster presentations. There will be also 6 clinical conferences. One of state of the art lectures will be dedicated to Jan Brod who is one of pioneers of Czech nephrology (Jan Brod Memorial Lecture).
    The European Society for Paediatric Nephrology Meeting will be held under the auspices of the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University and the Czech Medical Association J.E.Purkyne.
    We hope that you will enjoy the meeting in a our old University town. We will also try to offer an attractive and relaxing social programme.

The official language of the Congress will be English without simultaneous translation.

FINAL PROGRAMME AND ABSTRACT

The Final Scientific Congress Programme will be available on the Congress WWW site in several days. The printed version along with the Abstract book, will be distributed at the registration desk in the Zofín Palace (see Registration hours). All speakers will receive individual notification of the date and time of their presentations.

GRANTS

A limited number of grants will be provided for young investigators in training who present an accepted abstract. The grants are aimed to reduce costs for registration and accommodation. Persons interested to receive such a grant are kindly asked to send a personal letter to the President of the Congress. Selections of grants is currently in process, final information will be available soon.

REGISTRATION

Only registered delegates may participate in the scientific sessions, attend the technical exhibition and take part in the social programme included in the registration fee. The completed registration form with a copy of bank transfer or a cheque should be returned to the secretariat before JUNE 1, 1999 if you wish to benefit from the reduced fee.

Payments in CHF can be made by one of these ways:

If money is transferred by bank draft, a copy of the money order must be attached to the Registration form. Please, note that the registrant must take care of all bank charges for the bank draft. Registration forms are also available on WWW site (www.lf2.cuni.cz/info/espn99.htm). A receipt will be mailed to those who have forwarded the registration fee, as confirmation of registration. Form received without appropriate remittance will not be accepted as an early registration.

CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION

Any cancellation must be notified in writing to the Congress Secretariat. Registration fee will be refunded after deduction of 20% if participation is cancelled before July 15, 1999. No refund will be possible after this date but the complete documentation will be sent tho the address of the delegate. Cancellation policy for the accommodation and tourist programme will be specified in vouchers sent to registered delegates by the CBT Travel Agency.

ACCOMMODATION AND TOURIST PROGRAMME

Hotel or hostel accommodation and tourist programme will be arranged by the CBT Travel Agency Ltd. Completed accommodation and tourist programme forms should be forwarded to the address of the agency by June 30, 1999.

TECHNICAL EXHIBITION

Exhibition will be located at the congress venue and will be open too all registered participants. Pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers of medical equipment and publishers of medical literature are invited to display their products.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE

The certificate will be available for registered participants at the Registration desk.

TRAVEL TO PRAGUE

By Air

Prague Ruzyne Airport located 20 km from the Zofín Palace is served by many international lines. The oficial carrier will be the Czech Airlines (CSA). Please contact the CSA-office in your country, you can get a discount of  20%. The cost of the taxi from the Ruzyne Airport to the centre of Prague is at present about 500 - 700 CZK.

By car

The Highway Code in the Czech Republic is basically the same as that in other European countries. However, the following should be kept in mind:

* drive on the right
*safety belts must be worn at all times
*maximum speed is 90 km/h, in towns and villages 50 km/h and 130 km/h on highways
*a special sticker for highway use is required and can be purchased at border crossings or petrol stations for 800 CZK
*driving is prohibited after the consumption of any amount of alcohol

LOCAL TRANSPORT IN PRAGUE

Metro

The Prague Metro system consists of 3 lines designated by letters: line A (station "Skalka" – station "Dejvická"), line B (station ‘Ceskomoravská’ – station ‘Zlicín’), line C (station ‘Nádrazí Holešovice’ – station ‘Háje’), with transfers possible at station ‘Muzeum’ (lines A,C), station ‘Mustek’ (lines A,B) and station ‘Florenc’ (lines B,C). The Metro is in operation daily from 05.00 to 24.00. The closest station to the Congress site is station ‘Národní třída’ on line B.

Trams

Daytime operation is from 04.30 to 24.00. Night-time operation is from 24.00 to 04.30 and is provided by special night trams. Tram schedules are posted at individual stops. The closest stop to the Congress site is stop "Národní divadlo".

Buses

The daytime and night-time operation of buses is similar to that of trams. Bus schedules are posted at individual stops.

Fares

Passengers must obtain transport tickets before boarding a bus or tram or entering the Metro system. Tickets can be purchased at selected Metro stations or in Dopravní podnik Information Centres, hotels, news stands, travel agencies, etc. Single tickets can also be bought from automatic machines located at Metro stations. Free pass for municipal transport is covered in the registration fee and you will get it at the registration desk in Zofín Palace.

Taxis

Within the city of Prague, there are price regulations which specify maximum taxi rates; the registration number and price list must be displayed on both front doors of the cab. Visitors are strongly recommended either to order a taxi through non-stop dispatching offices where fare information is available or to agree on a fare with the driver in advance. The customer has the right to ask the taxi driver for a proper receipt of payment.

LETTER OF INVITATION

Will be sent on request. This letter, however, does not constitute any obligation for the Organizing committee to cover travel expenses registration fee and other costs connected with the participation in the Congress.

VISAS

Participants from the most European countries, Canada and USA can enter the Czech Republic without a visa. Other participants are advised to check the requirements at the closest Embassy or Consulate of the Czech Republic and to make their own arrangements.

INSURANCE

The Organizing Committee will not accept any liability for personal injuries or loss or damage of property belonging to Congress participants and accompanying persons. Kindly check your personal insurance.

CLIMATE AND DRESS

The weather at the beginning of September is usually nice but unpredictable. We recommend you to bring an umbrella and a light coat for day/evening time. Temperatures of around 20 °C can be expected. September in Czech is ‘zárí’, this literally means ‘blazing’. Informal dress will be suitable for all Congress activities.

Prices are based on minimum of 15 persons and include English speaking guide, transportation, admission fees and lunch or refreshments where indicated.

CITY TOUR of PRAGUE SEPTEMBER 2 / 9,00 – 13,00/

This is an introduction tour to your stay in Prague. You will see the most famous sights of Prague, commemorating its thousand year history. The tour will start at Hradcany area with admission to Strahov monastery. You will walk through Prague Castle to the Lesser town. The bus will take you through the historical city centre to the typical Prague restaurant where the lunch will be served.

Price: 40 CHF Included in the registration fee of accommpanying persons

PRAGUE JEWISH TOWN SEPTEMBER 2 / 14,00 – 17,30/

This tour will show you through the magical Jewish ghetto. You will visit Jewish synagogues and the very famous Jewish cemetery with fascinating mixture of 1200 tombstones. You will feel the atmosphere of the 15 and 16 centuries, the time when the famous Prague Golem lived here with his creator Rabbi Löw. The bus will take you close to the Jewish town. Return is individual after visiting of Old Town Square.

TRIP TO MELNÍK CHATEAU with wine tasting SEPTEMBER 3 / 9,00 – 15,00 /

This excursion will take you to the wine country north of Prague. You will visit Melník Chateau ( in private hands of the Lobkowicz family) and the wine cellars from the 13th century where will be a special wine tasting of local wines. Lunch will be served at the Chateau Restaurant.

TRIP TO KARLŠTEJN and NIZBOR FACTORY SEPTEMBER 4 / 9,00 – 17,00/

This trip will take you to the imposing Gothic castle built 650 years ago on a picturesque site in the heart of deep forests. The castle was founded by Emperor Charles IV to become the treasury of the coronation jewels and holy relics. Lunch will be served in a nearby restaurant. The excursion continues to the Nizbor Glass factory where the famous ‘Bohemian Crystal’ is made. There will be an opportunity for shopping.

The conference venue. Hotel has been completely reconstructed (former hotel International) and still is preserving the typical architecture style of the fifties. Free transport to the congress venue will be providet by a special bus in the morning.

This is a modern large capacity business hotel situated directly on the Metro Station Dejvická – Terminal of the line ‘A’. Hotel has all services of a luxury category, fitness centre, beauty salon, sauna, solarium, night club, choice of good restaurants. Hotel is easily reached from the main road ‘Evropská’ which goes to the airport.

Connection to Zofín Palace: by metro from the station "Dejvická" to station "Staroměstská" and then by tram No. 17 or 18 to station "Národní divadlo".

SCHWEIGER****

It ´s a nice small family hotel. All rooms are luxury furnished, with bath/WC, TV, telephone, minibar.
There is a Classic Restaurant, Daisy garden and Boss Bar in the hotel. Parking lot in front of

Connection to Zofín Palace: by bus No. 131 one station to station "Hradčanská" and from here by tram No. 18 to station "Národní divadlo".

ILF ***

High building situated directly on the Metro Station Budějovická, line ‘C’. All rooms have shower/WC, TV, telephone.

Connection to Zofín Palace: by metro from the station "Budějovická" to station "I.P. Pavlova" and then by tram No. 22 or 23 to tram station "Národní divadlo".

OLŠANKA ***

Hotel is situated 10 – 15 minutes by tram from the city centre. Simply furnished rooms with shower/WC, radio and TV with satellite. Hotel has restaurant, sauna and swimming pool.

Connection to Zofín Palace: by tram No. 5 to tram station "Masarykovo nádraZí" then by metro to station "Národní třída" and then by tram No. 18, 22 or 23 to station "Národní divadlo".

PYRAMIDA ***

Large modern building with indoor swimming pool, situated within 15 minutes walk from Prague Castle. Hotel has fitness centre, sauna, hairdresser, gift shop and a night club. All rooms are comfortably furnished with private bath/WC, TV, telephone and safe box.

JAS – pension

Pension JAS is a small hotel in Prague 6 – Suchdol. It offers all modern amenities with 16 comfortably appointed double rooms and 2 rooms with 4 beds. Each room has bath/WC, TV, telephone. There is a restaurant and a summer terrace, bar and food shop in the hotel. The parking lot is in front of the building. The hotel has a barrier free entrance for the handicapped.

Connection to Zofín Palace: by bus No. 116 or 160 to station "Dejvická" from here by metro to station "Staroměstská" and then by tram No. 17 or 18 to station "Národní divadlo".

SPRINT – pension

This pension is located in quiet surroundings of the diplomatic quarter not far from Hradčany Castle. It is a complex of buildings with double rooms some with shower/WC rest with common facilities – two bathrooms with toilets on each floor for 4 rooms.

Connection to Zofín Palace: 10 minutes by walk to tram No. 18 and go to station "Národní divadlo".

VLTAVA **

Hotel is a complex of large tall modern buildings. Rooms are simply furnished with shower/WC, TV, in each room. Parking lot is in the areal. Hotel is situated at the vicinity of the trams terminal: No. 22, 26.
